Faropenem sodium is used to treat bacterial infections of the respiratory tract including nose, ears, lungs, tonsils. It is also used to treat kidney and bladder infections, prostate infections and various skin infections.

How it works

Faropenem sodium belongs to a group of medicines called carbapenem beta-lactam antibiotics. It kills bacteria by inhibiting the bacterial cell wall (outer coating of bacteria) formation. As a result, the bacterial cell wall is weakened and ruptures, thereby killing the bacteria.

Dosage

Always follow the instructions of doctor regarding the dosage and duration.For treatment of lower respiratory tract, ear, nose, throat, and genito-urinary infections:

–Adults: 200 mg or up to 300 mg thrice daily

For treatment of upper respiratory tract, skin and skin structure, and gynecological infections:

–Adults: 150 mg or up to 200 mg thrice daily

Common side effects

Nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and rashes, kidney impairment, Stevens-Johnson syndrome (serious, widespread, allergic reaction with a rash involvingthe skin and internal lining of the digestive tract), severe allergic reactions, breathing trouble, dizziness, loose motions, ringing in the ear, sweating, redness (flushing) of the whole body, swelling of the body, low blood pressure, shock, liver problems, muscle pain, headache, drowsiness, and vitamin deficiency

Who should not take

–Do not take faropenem if you are allergic to it or to other carbapenem or to beta-lactams, or any of the other ingredients of this drug.
–Faropenem should not be given to children.

Faropenem sodium tablet should be usedwith caution in patients with poor oral intake or poor general state because ofvitamin K deficiency and elderly people Do not start or continue theFaropenem sodiumand consult your doctor:
• If you have a family history ofallergy (atopy) or severe allergic reaction (hypersensitivity) to penicillin,cephalosporin or carbapenem drugs
• If you have kidney problem
• If you are pregnant, planning tobecome pregnant, or breastfeeding
• If you experience diarrhea andloose bowel movements
